cold laser therapy

can cold laser therapy help my horse?

Cold Laser therapy has been a wonderful asset in veterinary and human medicine alike. I have had rewarding results using it.

Cold lasers have been used worldwide for decades. In 1916 Albert Einstein devised the theory of Light Amplification through Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER). In 1967 Professor Andre Mester began using low power lasers in medicine and is recognized by many as the grandfather of laser therapy.

Cold Laser is also known as Low Level Laser and Soft Laser.

Mechanism of Action

Cold laser is a therapeutic laser that works via photobiomodulation which uses non-ionizing electromagnetic energy to trigger photochemical changes in the cellular structures that are receptive to photons. Mitochondria are particularly receptive to this process.

During laser application, photons of light pass through the skin to reach our intended target area, is absorbed and interacts with light sensitive elements in our cells. This process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants; sunlight absorption in plants is converted to usable energy so that a plant can grow.

When cells absorb the light energy, it initiates a cascade of events that results in healing injured tissue, reduction in pain, inflammation, and edema. The healing process is expedited by increasing intracellular metabolism.

Not All Lasers Are Created Equal

I sought to acquire the best cold laser for my patients. The laser I acquired uses four different wavelengths combined with magnetic therapy to work together to expedite healing and allow deeper depth of laser penetration to the tissue area of concern. This is a True Super Pulsed Laser that gives me the option to use a red light, blue light, or a combination. This advanced technology is FDA approved.

Conclusion

Cold laser therapy is an asset in veterinary and human medicine alike. It is an effective tool that expedites healing and decreases pain. As the other modalities discussed in this website, your horse will thank you if given the opportunity to have received cold laser therapy.

Is Your horse needle-shy?

Cold Laser therapy has been a wonderful option for veterinarians to use acupuncture to treat patients who are not so keen on needles!

Benefits of Cold Laser Therapy

  • Accelerate Healing: tendon, ligament injuries (bowed tendons), cartilage, bone
  • Relieve Pain: feet, muscles, joints, (hocks, sacroiliac), spasms
  • Treat Wounds and Infections: traumatic injuries, burn wounds, bacteria, fungi infections (scratches, rain rot)
  • Repair Nerve Damage: unusual sweat pattern, paralysis
  • Improve Blood Circulation
  • Expedite Healing of Scars: surgical incision (cat spay, knee replacement)
  • Treat Lick Granuloma in small animals
